How to Improve the Bowl Without Replacing the Main Meal

At Nature's Diet, we developed Simply Raw® and Ready Raw® to offer pet owners a healthy, human-grade alternative to kibble. While most dogs prefer the aroma and nutritional value of whole raw foods, some dogs are already happy with their food as-is and may just need something extra to add to the nutritional content. Some bowls do not need a dramatic reinvention. They may just need a small adjustment.

Maybe dinner gets eaten, but only after a splash of broth, a topper, a little hand-mixing, and a minute of coaxing. Maybe the meal is technically working, but only after several additions. That usually means one of two things: either the bowl needs one simple improvement, or the food itself may no longer be the best fit.

At Nature's Diet, we think the cleanest way to improve a dog's bowl is to decide that question early. Is dinner mostly fine and just a little flat, or are you fixing it every night?

If you are not ready to change the main meal, that is okay. Keeping kibble and adding broth or a topper is a practical way to make a gradual transition. When you are ready to move beyond kibble, the next step is choosing the raw meal that fits your priorities.

If the Meal Mostly Works, Improve the Bowl With One Add-On

If the food is basically staying put and you just want to make the bowl more inviting, start small.

Original Chicken Bone Broth is usually our first move because it is simple. It can be mixed with water or poured over food, which makes it one of the easiest ways to improve a dog's bowl without turning dinner into a new project.

Raw Toppers® are the next step when you want a more substantial topper. They can be served dry or rehydrated and are designed for dogs and cats as a daily topper, not as a replacement meal.

If you make one small change and dinner goes more smoothly, stop there. You do not need to keep adding more.

If your dog simply prefers kibble, Raw Coated® is our premium kibble option. It is grain-free, oven-baked kibble coated with freeze-dried raw chicken liver and bone broth, with probiotics and other whole-food ingredients. It keeps the familiar dry-kibble format while offering a more elevated option than standard kibble.

Raw Coated® is a good choice when your dog prefers kibble and you want to stay with that format. It is different from using broth or a topper as an add-on, and it is also different from moving to a complete raw meal. The right choice depends on what your dog will eat and how much change makes sense for your household.

If the Meal Needs Several Additions, Consider Changing the Main Meal

If dinner only works after several additions, the issue may not be the topper. It may be time to consider the main meal.

Ready Raw® is the more convenient transition from kibble. It is a complete meal served straight from the bag, so the format feels more familiar while still giving you a clear step beyond kibble.

Simply Raw® 1 lb Trial Size is the higher-quality option when you are willing to add water. It takes a little more preparation than Ready Raw®, but that extra step is part of choosing the strongest upgrade to the main meal.

At a certain point, adding more to dinner is less useful than choosing a different main meal. When that happens, changing the food itself may be a simpler long-term solution.

Change One Thing at a Time

The easiest way to make feeding more confusing is to change everything at once.

If you add broth, a topper, and a new meal at the same time, you learn almost nothing. If you change one thing and the bowl gets calmer, you have your answer.

That is why we like this order:

  • start with broth

  • move to a topper if needed

  • change the main meal if the bowl still needs too much help

That is enough. You do not need to change the whole routine in one evening.
